Atlantic Row Aborted After Dangerous And Unusual Weather Conditions

Atlantic Row Aborted After Dangerous And Unusual Weather Conditions

Sören and Måns set out to row the Atlantic ocean from Lagos (Portugal) to Antigua (West Indies) on the 28th of December after having to wait over two weeks for weather conditions to stabilize. When they were just one day from reaching their intermediate destination of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, the wind changed drastically and started pushing them northwest out into the open Northern Atlantic, far away from the needed trade winds towards the Caribbean. They struggled through difficult wind and waves and finally managed to land on Madeira. By then they were delayed over a month and with all margins of time, budget and resources used up. Waiting for manageable conditions to continue south and towards Antigua, the risk of going into the hurricane season would be unacceptably high. The portuguese trade winds seem to have changed into a much less reliable behaviour, it is unbelievable how a storm from the Atlantic could reach so far south and pull us all the way up to Madeira. Facing these circumstances we have no choice but to terminate the project, and declare Madeira the final destination. Our involvement in life in the oceans remains unchanged, and we hope that we can still create enough attention for the Baltic harbour porpoise to help save them from extinction. We gave it our best shot, however we are humble towards the immense forces of nature. It has been an extraordinary experience, very different from what we expected, challenging, emotional and extremely tough. The Atlantic will still be there…

”The Baltic Harbour Porpoise is the Baltic’s own whale, but it is urgently close to extinction and red listed with only a few hundred individuals left” says Sören Kjellkvist.

”Political decisions and specific changes need to happen soon, this should have been done a long time ago. Sweden’s lack of action has been criticized by the EU commission” says Måns Kämpe.

Ida Carlén, expert at Coalition Clean Baltic, adds: ”We work on demanding the changes required to allow the Baltic Harbour Porpoise to survive and stabilize, and the collaboration with Måns and Sören gives us a chance to bring this issue to a broader audience. A lot of people are not even aware that there is a species of whale in the Baltic, and that it is so close to extinction.”

Day 24, 2022-01-20

We have safely reached the Marina of Calheta on the beautiful island of Madeira!
Rowing in crazy conditions to try to reach Madeira, and finally realizing the wind would blow us west of the island, we contacted Madeira authorities and a rib boat came out and towed us into the nearest port.
Now we have rested and regained some energy, but are still sorting out a lot so we will be back with some more detailed information later.

Day 21, 2022-01-17

Tired and worn, but the risk of missing Madeira too made it difficult to rest completely. Still, we managed to get some good sleep.

Day 21, 2022-01-17

Weather:

Clouds: 8/8

Wind: 18 m/s

Temp: 16 degrees

Heavy rain

Distance: 89 km

Average distance: 72 km

Total distance: 1503 km

Position: Lat 31.091073 Lon -16.78653

Health/emotions: Tired and worn, but the risk of missing Madeira too made it difficult to rest completely. Still, we managed to get some good sleep.

Description of the day

Strong wind and waves are still making it impossible to row, so we are drifting northwest with no chance to do anything about it. The weather forecast says this wind will stay with us at least for the rest of this week, so landing in Madeira will definitely be challenging and possibly dangerous. Heavy rain during the afternoon, waves still crash over the boat.

Continuous noise from shipping and other human activities can cause disturbance of important behaviours and cause stress. It can also mask important sounds, decreasing the range at which a mother and a calf for example can hear each other, or making it difficult to find a mating partner.

Health/emotions: Exhausted from being awake and busy all night and tossed around in the waves all day. We miss our families!

Description of the day

During the night we managed to round Savage Islands, making sure not to get caught in the hazardous cliffs. Freaky waves have been crashing into and over the boat all the time, the biggest felt like we were being rammed by a bulldozer. One man had to constantly be ready to run the bilge pump. The cabin is damp from seawater breaking in just about every time we opened the hatch. So tired of being wet. Some Pink Floyd under the full moon lifts the mood!

Harbour porpoises are also exposed to underwater noise from heavy shipping traffic and fast leisure boats. For the Baltic Sea harbour porpoises to recover, we need more areas where these activities are restricted.

Day 19, 2022-01-15

Constant heavy winds and big waves are wearing us down. It's difficult to sleep and the appetite is gone. So frustrating to spend our energy on coping with weird weather rather than on rowing towards the Caribbean.

Day 19, 2022-01-15

Health/emotions: Constant heavy winds and big waves are wearing us down. It's difficult to sleep and the appetite is gone. So frustrating to spend our energy on coping with weird weather rather than on rowing towards the Caribbean.

Description of the day

Another night of strong wind and waves are crashing into the hull of the boat, so we didn't manage to sleep more than one or two hours. We are now drifting northwest. Most of the day was spent looking at the weather forecast, checking drift course and speed and discussing options. Since the biggest waves crash over the boat, we get soaked whenever we open a hatch or go outside to fix something. The best option seems to be to drift towards Madeira and hope that we can land for some much-needed maintenance and recovery.

Coalition Clean Baltic- Save the baltic porpoise

Sometimes, detecting a nylon net underwater is very difficult. The porpoise might be “looking” in another direction, for example when hunting, or the filaments are so thin that it is difficult to detect them underwater. If the porpoise accidentally gets caught in a net it will not be able to surface to breathe and will drown

Health/emotions: We're disappointed, frustrated and tired. The morale is low.

Description of the day

All night and morning we both made a heroic effort to get as far south as possible before the wind shift, to have any chance at reaching the Canaries. At sunrise, the wind picked up force and then shifted south, and after an hour we found ourselves in 15 m/s winds pushing us northwest. It became pointless and risky to row, so we decided to set up the rudder for drifting as much west as possible and get some well-deserved rest and recovery. Southernly winds are very rare in this area, but the forecast says that we will have these conditions for the coming five or six days. All we can do now is accept that we couldn't land on the Canary Islands, and refocus towards Antigua.

Coalition Clean Baltic- Save the baltic porpoise

Description of the day

Started wonderfully with a pod of dolphins coming up to the boat in the darkness at 6 am, circling around and puffing air, some as close as two meters from the boat. A few hours later we received an updated weather report that says that the wind has decided to turn against us. Now we are again looking at heavy southernly winds, that might make it impossible to land at the Canaries. We will row through the night and hope for the best.

Coalition Clean Baltic- Save the baltic porpoise

Porpoises do not use whistles as dolphins do. Instead, porpoises use echolocation clicks to “see” underwater and to communicate with each other. The porpoise produces clicks that bounce off objects in the surroundings and interpret the echoes, just like bats do in the air.

Health/emotions: Today felt like summer vacation!

Description of the day

A long day of rowing in calm and hot summer weather. Just after breakfast Sören saw a dolphin make a perfect show jump just in front of the boat, and a few minutes later we had a pod of around 20 dolphins surrounding us. After 10 curious minutes they left. At lunch Sören went for a swim, and after the next rowing shift Måns did the same. Now we feel refreshed and in a great mood! The evening gave us moonlight and a beautiful starry sky, and Måns saw a falling star with a fire and smoke tail that broke into burning pieces. We see falling stars every night, but not this close.

Coalition Clean Baltic- Save the baltic porpoise

In the 1950’s and 1960’s, nylon fishing nets were introduced. These nets are more durable and easier for the fishermen to handle than the old ones, and the amount of nets in the Baltic increased, which meant the by-catches also increased.

Because porpoises need to breathe air, they drown if they cannot come to the surface. They are threatened by fisheries since they can get caught and drown in fishing nets. This is one of the primary reasons there are so few porpoises left in the Baltic Sea today.

Harbour porpoises generally have higher metabolic rates than terrestrial mammals of the same size, which means they need more energy in relation to their size than most mammals on land. The energy needed for a harbour porpoise is up to two times higher than for a similar-sized land-living mammal.

Marine mammals in temperate regions such as the Baltic build up a thicker blubber layer in preparation for the colder winter period, and are usually a little slimmer during summer. Marine mammals, including the harbour porpoises, need to insulate their bodies to not lose too much body heat and hence energy to the surrounding water. They do this by building up a layer of fat under the skin called a blubber layer. In a porpoise in the Baltic Sea region this layer should be several centimetres thick.

Day 7, 2022-01-03

We both feel great! Today was the first day that we ate three meals, and the returning appetite goes hand in hand with increasing physical performance levels.

Health/emotions: We both feel great! Today was the first day that we ate three meals, and the returning appetite goes hand in hand with increasing physical performance levels.

Description of the day

A beautiful and calm day on the ocean. The weather forecast promises increasing winds in the coming days, so today we prepared by running the watermaker to fill up our drinking water containers. Sunset was spectacular, and the stars above us as we write this are amazing! And someone mentioned a meteor shower...

Given the constant need for food and high energy needs, scientists are also concerned that if there are less prey available for porpoises to hunt, they may have to spend more time and energy searching for food. This can in turn has negative impacts on their ability to reproduce.

Aphorism

Get going. Get up and walk if you have to, but finish the damned race!

Day 6, 2022-01-02

We are getting used to the environment and routine, physically and mentally. No broken bones today. :-)

Day 6, 2022-01-02

Temp: 17 degrees

Distance: 52 km

Average distance: 47 km

Total distance: 281 km

Position: 35.890445,-10.389505

Health/emotions: We are getting used to the environment and routine, physically and mentally. No broken bones today. :-)

Description of the day

This has been a great day! It feels like the first day when we didn't have to fight the wind, the weather was calm and comfortable. Suddenly we ran out of electricity and discovered that our solar panels had stopped charging the battery packs. A restart of the electrical system seems to have fixed the problem, and we are now running with minimal power until the batteries are fully charged again. During the afternoon we saw a pod of dolphins about 80 meters from the boat. Beautiful!

We have received questions about food: We are sponsored by 24 Hour Meals, which provide food packs for outdoor activities as well as for the Swedish Armed Forces. We eat their wet portion packs that provide good energy and actually taste great. And yes, they have vegan meals too! :-P

Coalition Clean Baltic- Save the baltic porpoise

Porpoises spend a lot of their time looking for food and hunting. A porpoise cannot last more than about three days without food before starving to death. This means that they are very vulnerable to changes in the ecosystem if it affects the availability of prey.

Aphorism

The will to win means nothing if you haven’t the will to prepare.

Day 5, 2022-01-01

Sea sickness is finally over and we are on top of the Maslow ladder.

Temp: 15 degrees

Distance: 55 km

Health/Emotions: Seasickness is finally over and we are on top of the Maslow ladder.

Description of the day

Finally, we don’t have to force-feed down food but can actually enjoy eating again. I had a Chilli con Carne today that was fantastic and Måns had a Stroganoff without meat (he’s vegan).

Also, we can enjoy the starry night and Milky Way lighting up our night.

Mareld, a remarkable type of plankton that at the least disturbance emits a strong green glow, is firing up the water in incredible colours with each oar stroke and glowing small fish are swimming alongside the rowboat.

We are so grateful for all the support we are receiving from all over the world. It is highly appreciated! :-)

Coalition Clean Baltic - Save the Baltic Porpoise

In the Baltic, porpoises eat mostly pelagic fish, which means fish that live in the water column rather than at the bottom. This includes for example herring, sprat and cod. However, porpoises need to eat almost constantly, so it is likely that they eat whatever they come across, even though they probably have favourite foods just like you and me.

Aphorism

Think ahead, travel light, and leave all your fears behind you.
